Along-term perspective on Covid-19.
The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic is affecting all of us in different ways, the only common factor being the speed of the events unfolding around us.
What seems extraordinary today becomes almost routine a few days later. The priority is of course the health of ourselves and those around us.
Financial Planning has always been about long-term perspective and it is more important than ever that we put that thinking at the centre of the advice and the service we provide.
In this article Danny Knight, Head of Investment Directors at Quilter Investors, provides some valuable perspective on how the outbreak is likely to affect markets in 4 phases, how markets have fallen and then recovered after other recent pandemics, and a graph of bond and equity markets since 1997, reminding us how massive global events shrink to almost an investment footnote when viewed over a 20 year period. The graph also reminds us of the unprecedented rise in markets since the 2008 crash. The market was looking for a reason to correct to a more normal level of long-term returns and this one came gift wrapped.
